Wednesday 11th of May 2016 Finland deposited its instrument of ratification to the Secretary General of the UN on the convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities (CRPD) and its optional protocol.
They will enter into force for Finland on 10th of June 2016
Committing to the CRPD means that its participants have the obligation to protect the fundamental freedoms and human rights of all persons with disabilities. The ratification strengthens the duty to promote these as legally binding human rights.
During the short ceremony Finland’s Permanent Representative, Kai Sauer expressed his satisfaction that Finland not only joined the CRPD but at the same time also to its Optional Protocol "The ratification strengthens the protection of the persons with disabilities in Finland people and increases the credibility of Finland's human rights policy.
The Optional protocol establishes the individual communications procedure and an inquiry procedure at the Committee’s own initiative.
