Press release 165/2014
15 July 2014
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland has made a decision to grant a total of EUR 27.5 million to 28 International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) for their development cooperation efforts. A Call for Proposals for INGO support was announced in April earlier this year. The Ministry received a total of 125 applications seeking funding for approximately EUR 130 million.
The majority of proposals received, among the topical pre-determined 10 themes, were linked to promotion of human rights and democracy, peace-building, and strengthening of civil society. Geographically focused projects were sought for initiatives in North Africa and the Middle East as well as Vietnam. Other themes, under which programs will be supported, include. i.a., domestic resource mobilisation, sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as, planetary resilience and ecological sustainability.
The development cooperation funds channeled through International Non-Governmental Organisations will realize 29 development projects around the globe or provide core funding to organisations that work on these thematic fields. These partner INGOs will carry out advocacy and campaign work, and provide know-how and services in developing countries.
At the core of the cooperation between the Ministry and these organisations lie the uniformity of goals as per Finland's Development Policy and the strong expertise of the organisations. This funding to International Non-Governmental Organisations is one of the means through which the Ministry seeks to complement the implementation of Foreign and Development Policy of Finland.
