Minister Haavisto to attend the OSCE equality conference in Vienna

Press Release 160/2014
9 July 2014

Development Minister Pekka Haavisto will attend the Gender Equality Review Conference on 10 July. The conference in Vienna is organized by the OSCE, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. The two-day meeting will review the implementation thus far of the OSCE Action Plan for the Promotion of Gender Equality adopted in 2004, and will prepare future work.

Minister Haavisto will speak at the High-level Opening Session of the conference. In his remarks, Haavisto raises the significance of the gender perspective in comprehensive security thinking. He stresses in particular the importance of women’s participation in conflict prevention and resolution, and in crisis management and mediation. Minister Haavisto also draws attention to the position of Roma women and empowerment as an example of the links between security and equality.

In conjunction with the conference, Minister Haavisto will meet among others with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, OSCE Commissioner on National Minorities AstridThors, Michael Link, the new Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), and with representatives of NGOs.

Within the OSCE, Finland places strong emphasis on the importance of gender equality. Among other things, Finland, together with Austria, Turkey and Kazakhstan, presented the initiative for compiling the OSCE Action Plan for the Promotion of Gender Equality. Finland strives to ensure that more women than at present are obtained for crisis management and conflict resolution tasks, including leadership positions. Finland supports the gender equality work of the OSCE Secretariat and organs by seconding experts and through funding and project cooperation.

The OSCE is the world’s largest regional security organization. The organization aims to incorporate the gender equality perspective in comprehensive security questions. For instance, it supports women’s political participation and economic empowerment, and works to combat violence against women.
