Balkan flood victims’ need for assistance continues – Ministry for Foreign Affairs grants money for humanitarian aid and reconstruction

Press release 132/2014
4 June 2014

By decision of Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs grants 400,000 euros in humanitarian aid to assist flood victims in the Balkans.

This aid will be channelled through the Finnish Red Cross to support the work of local Red Crosses in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, in accordance with the appeal for aid made by the International Red Cross.

“The immediate rescue phase is now over, but the need for humanitarian assistance in the areas affected by flooding will continue for several months. People have lost their homes, and there is the risk of diseases as the summer progresses because, among other things, there are still dead domestic animals in the stagnant waters. Finland’s assistance will support responding to the basic needs of tens of thousands of the most vulnerable people while reconstruction efforts are launched at the same time,” Minister Haavisto says.

Of the humanitarian aid now granted, 200,000 euros will go to Serbia and 200,000 euros to Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The needs of over 12,000 families in Serbia and 10,000 families in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be supported, focusing on water and sanitation, temporary shelters, cash assistance, psycho-social support and the resumption of basic livelihoods.

At the same time, Finland is prepared to grant 400,000 to reconstruction in the region. The forms of assistance will be defined once the needs have been specified.
