OSCE Monitoring Mission to Ukraine

Press release 68/2014
21 March 2014

On 21 March, the Organization of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)  made a decision to deploy a Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. The about 100-strong group of experts will be deployed with an aim is to contribute to reducing tensions and fostering peace, stability and security by monitoring the security situation and realisation of human rights in the country.

The mission will consist of approximately 100 international observers, and, initially, it will be deployed for a period of six months, after which its mandate may be renewed. Finland is prepared to send Finnish experts to the mission, their number being confirmed in the coming days.

"I am very pleased with the decision reached today, and I am glad to see that all parties are committed to taking action to have the crisis in Ukraine solved," said Foreign Minister of Finland Erkki Tuomioja today after the finalisation of the decision.

The Special Monitoring Mission is part of the action taken by OSCE in the crisis in Ukraine. The OSCE also carries out other projects aiming at peace and stability in the country, and is getting prepared to observe the upcoming presidential elections in May. The OSCE is the world's largest regional security organization, with 57 member states, including all EUmember states, Ukraine, the US and Russia.
