Press Releases, 10/10/2013 | Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland

Finland is strongly committed to the development of the Common Security and Defence Policy

Press release 217/2013
10 October 2013

Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja spoke about the development and strengthening of the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy at the discussion “The Future of European Security and Defence”, organized by the Ministry’s Unit for Policy Planning and Research and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs on Thursday, 10 October.

In his speech, Tuomioja stressed that Finland will continue its active commitment to the development of the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy. Finland has participated in almost all of the EU’s military and civilian crisis management operations. This reflects the important role of international crisis management in Finland’s foreign policy.

Finland’s goal is to develop the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy in a more comprehensive direction. The opportunities and effectiveness created by the policy will have to be utilized to the full in the future.

In Finland’s view, the strategy of the EU’s foreign and security policy must therefore be made more systematic. Clear priorities must be laid down to reflect European interests and values amidst changing relations between global powers.

Besides Tuomioja, the event was attended by Vice-Minister Andrius Krivas of Lithuania, Director Antonio Missiroli of the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), and Director Teija Tiilikainen of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
