Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja will participate in the opening week of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly on 24–28 September. The Finnish delegation, led by President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö, will also include Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala and Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson.
Minister Tuomioja together with the Foreign Minister of Turkey will host a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation on Thursday, 27 September. On the same day, he will speak at the launch of the United Nations peace mediation guidelines. The guidelines defining the basic principles of peace mediation are one of the concrete achievements of the peace mediation initiative presented by Finland and Turkey. In addition, the Foreign Minister will participate in events organised by Finland and the United States, which deal with women’s right to legal services and women’s equal opportunity for political and economic participation. The Minister will also speak about follow-up of the Rio Conference on Sustainable Development at the Special Ministerial Meeting of ECOSOC, the UN Economic and Security Council, and he will participate in meetings related to arms control.
Minister for International Development Hautala will be in New York on 1–3 October. She will attend the 20th Anniversary Conference of the Forum of Small States, where she will deliver a speech on green growth and innovation. The Minister will also meet with high-level leaders of UN organisations, such as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos and Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Wu Hongbo.
This year, Finland’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the years 2013–14 will be promoted actively at a high political level during the opening week of the General Assembly. The election of non-permanent members to the Security Council will take place in October. Minister Tuomioja will meet, among others, with Foreign Ministers from Central America, the Caribbean and West Africa. The high-level group meetings to be attended by Minister Hautala will focus on the situation in fragile states and the Environment and Energy Partnership Programme that came about through Finland’s initiative. In addition, both Ministers will have numerous bilateral ministerial-level meetings.
