Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja will attend the informal Gymnich meeting of EU Foreign Ministers Meeting in Pafos, Cyprus, on 7–8 September.
During the two-day meeting, the foreign ministers will discuss the horizontal themes of the EU Common Foreign Policy. In particular, water and education will be prominent on the agenda. The discussions will centre on the importance of water supply and resource management for conflict prevention. In addition, the ministers will assess the role of education in fostering stability, as well as actions for improving educational opportunities in crisis areas.
The second main topic of the meeting is the situation in Syria and the European Union’s measures in the region. The ministers will discuss how measures taken by the EU support efforts to resolve the crisis, where the key role is played by Lakhdar Brahimi, the new UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria. In addition, the agenda will include other topical issues in EU foreign policy.
