Minister Haavisto to European Roma Summit

Press release 82/2014
4 April 2014

Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto will participate in the European Roma Summit to be held in Brussels on 4 April. The Summit seeks to find means for enhancing the equal status of the Roma in EU Member States.

The Summit focuses particularly on how to deliver further on the implementation of the EU Framework for national Roma integration strategies, exploring such questions as how to make local authorities implement plans, and what kind of support they would need for Roma integration. In a high-level panel, Minister Haavisto will tell about Finland’s experiences, and explain how important it is to involve the Roma in the process. For example, in Finland, we have succeeded in reaching good results in school attendance of Roma children thanks to co-operation between education authorities and the Roma.

During his visit, Minister Haavisto will also meet Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Development; Osman Saleh Muhammad, Minister of Education for Eritrea; and Nicholas Westcott, Managing Director for Africa in the European External Action Service. The topics of discussion in these meetings will include the post-2015 UN development goals, issues related to the states of the Horn of Africa, and the development of fragile states in general.

Further information on the European Roma Summit is available at the address: The Summit debates can also be followed through the link available on this website.

The previous Roma Summits were held in Brussels in 2008 and in Córdoba in 2010.
